Face Value
Portraiture is the process of constructing a photo or taking a photo of a person or even a thing this is known as portraiture. Portraiture likes to focus on one thing and try's to make the subject the centre of attention. There are different types of portraiture like environmental portraits where you focus a lot on the background.
I remember the first portrait I saw was of my self on a climbing frame. I think the portrait was taken by either my dad or grandad. The image was presented to family. I prefer portraits of things not people
I found this task some what easy to recreate because the original was quite simple and i did not have to use any special props or extra people. I think the first photo looks the most similar because it has a tree as well and the original is zoomed in just like the original. I made it my self using a bench to recreate a climbing frame. I would like to develop this project by using old photos of my self and changing locations.
I found this task quite easy and it did not take long to compose. The original photo I used was of me after a sports day in primary school and I recreated It with a lanyard and some stickers. The location was the same however its also different because it has changed since then. I also chose this photo because I remember when it was took, it was in primary school after a sports day and i even had a broken elbow. I used a lanyard a white top and some yellow stickers to recreate the first image.
Nico Froe- Environmental portraits
In these photographs i decided to focus on the background as well as the person in the environmental portrait. Especially in the the last one i captured the background as well as the person and it was even better because he was centred and the background was clear. These photos they remind me of Nico Froe and it really interests me especially the change of background. If i was to title my piece of work I would call it inside of Thomas Tallis. I personally think that people would really like my work on this project and i think this because the camera quality and the background used.
Nico Froe takes portrait of people that are around him.Nico frames his images by having the person or subject in the centre of the shot. Nico likes to use the background to create a sense of importance to the subject. Nico takes photos of people off the streets or buildings during the day and night. The colour of the portraits vary depending on time in the day for example the second photo uses the night. He makes south London look a lively place and shows the media the true side of south London
Tyler Mitchell
Tyler Mitchell took these photos to express the cultural diversity, by this I mean he wanted to show young black people at leisure. The people in the photographs are usually young black men. Personally, I think that he has shown young black men as he wanted to highlight a different story than we see in the media. I think the images are bright, colourful and playful.

Portraits
During the composition of these portraits we decided to use the darkroom and decided to use flash as well to light up the whole room. We took the same portraits for some of them but with different angles. I think the use of the darkroom furthered our ideas for portraits because of it being a confined space. I personally like the last portrait the most because of the angles used and the flash was also being used.
Element of portraits
in the first photo we decided to use the idea of a passport photo with a blank background and no facial expression with a light. The second photo was based off a mug shot with little facial expression with a bit of guilt and overall just the same as the passport. For the penultimate photo we did a family portrait i tried to make the picture centred with it being 2 at the top 3 at the bottom but i personally think it came out quite despite it not being in a studio. The final photo was supposed to be a self portrait so i decided to use a reflection for it as i rather it then show my face.
The relationship between the art of portraits and art
I am pleased that i was able to select the point of focus in this image correctly. This helped me create a contrast between the objects that are in sharp focus and those that are out of focus. I also decided to edit the photograph by cropping it and changing the lighting and making it darker. It would be even better if we had a pearl to make the photo even better.
Man Ray
The strategy of making visual prints without utilizing a camera (photograms) is pretty much as old as photography itself - however arose again in different vanguard settings in the mid 1920s. The new prints eventually received the moniker "rayographs" because of the artist Man Ray's significant contributions to the process's refinement and personalization.
Man Ray's nickname for the photogram, a type of photograph taken without a camera or lens, was "rayograph."Objects are placed on light-sensitive paper and then exposed to light to create photograms.Where objects have stopped light from exposing the paper by resting on it, the light areas of the print are visible. Ray's two main methods were his favoured rayographs and the application of solarisation. He obtained photograms by placing an object directly on photosensitive paper and exposing it to light, resulting the transfer of an object with tones of various intensities.
Lighting workshop
-put the light at 45 degrees
-main light is the key light
-when the lights above the shadows are underneath the subject
-soft boxes
-with diffusion it makes the light softer
-you can manipulate where you want the light
-no diffusion on led lights
-filament lights
-led varsar
-two point light system
-two toning

These photos we experimented with different lights and gels over the lights to change colour. I quite like how simplistic these photos are but how detalied they are at the same time. I particularly like the ones were we added a green gel over the light, we then put a normal light on the otherside to stop the green halfway and make it half and half.
Rankin
Rankin says fashion and celebrity photography could be criticised for being looked at in a different perspective. Rankin sees himself as the main subject of such criticism and the new project of Rankin called `Destroy' is one way he can respond to his critics with characteristics, in this he allows his images to be destroyed and sells them benefiting a music charity for young people. His purpose is to make people understand what skills are used in creating tempting images that stand out to everyone. Rankin faces challenges to this project which are to study the hard techniques which are used to make these or to generate memorable portraits for people.
Editing and refining
In these photos we used vairous different ways to change a photo into a different type of picture like turning it into a negative or even changing it into a photogram. The last out of the bottom three i used an app to make the person black and white but left the background with colour.
Lee Friedlander
In these photographs i see that he likes to use reflections to take a photo and he also uses different things to become more abstract with the photos. The pictures seem to have different positioning with it either being up close, in the corner and off centre. What interests me most is how he can find different ways to either hide his face or get certain shadows on his face. These photographs use different ways to present the background he does this really well in the 2nd picture where you can see his face in the corner and also his surroundings. If i was to name this project out of these three photos I would probably call it 1 mirror many faces. From these photos i've learned different ways to either use shadows on my reflections and various ways to abstract my face.
- Lee Friedlander had always wanted to start photography as he was fascinated with the materials that were used
- Lee was able to compose various amount of visual information in dynamic compositions
- In 1956 Lee moved to New York and started to work with Atlantic Records
- His main genre of photography is social landscape he used detached images of urban life
- Lee mainly used the Leica 35-mm camera to compose his photographs
- He also published many books over the course of 60 years
e uses a mask to cover a face. He takes the photo at eye level and uses the mirror to capture the top half of the body and the mask creates more suspense to the photo. Lee mainly takes photos in the mirror for self portraits and has his face mainly covered or hidden throughout. I think this photo has a deep meaning with using the mask.

Self portraits homework
Throughout these photos i decided to change backgrounds with some being either inside or outside. My favourites are probably the ones that are outside as they were taking mostly during the sunset which i quite liked the lighting for. For each photo i didnt explicitly show my face but i had some faeatures throughout with some not even showing my head only the bottom half of my body.
Ziqianqian
These images are very abstract as it also has minimalistic features but also has different features with an occurring theme with flowers. What interests me about this work is how its a self portrait but doesn’t show her face and in some photos i like this because people typically have their re face in a self portrait. I like how she used spacing throughout the self portraits because she either will use all of the frame for her self or barely use the frame. I think that it is worth remembering that in a self portrait your face doesn’t always have to be shown. The genre of her photos are typically self portraits as they all have a feature of her self however this is not how people think self portraits are meant to be like and breaks the stereotype for them.
Ziqianqian's photography is very abstract and it really breaks the typical type of self portraits. In this photo you can tell that the image is taken at ruffly eye level to match the right height of the chair and to also get the right position for the mirror. She uses two genres in her photos with them being self portraits and reflections the use of reflection makes the photo abstract and it allows the photo to actually be a self portrait. I like how the colours are being used in this photo as they are very neutral but the reflection adds a sort of light to the foreground.
In these photos we decided to copy her style and use a mirror to make the photos minimalistic we used a variety of different backgrounds and a variety of mirrors for different shapes. I quite like the 5th photo as it haas the different colours and you cant see his whole face, this adds a colour to the background instead of it being plain.
My photos were inspired by Lee Friedlander as i like the way he uses reflections in his work and doesn’t always show his face despite it being a self portrait. I took these photos and mainly focused on the background or foreground for each one, all of these photos were taken in my bedroom and i think next time i take images ill use different places. I liked the fact that a self portrait doesnt have to show your face and also would rather use an slr instead of a phone.
in these photos i used different lights and decided to cover my face with either the light or just my hands. The first photo i like because you cant see my full face but can see certain different features like my eye and a bit of my nose. The second and third photo i decided to cover my face with the box light
Refining work
This work i decided to take a few self portraits and then also refine them with an editing app which allowed me to change my pictures slightly but also a big change. The first photo i edited i decided to keep it simple and change it to black and white and lowered the warmness of the photo as it would’ve intervene with the black and white. The second self portrait i used a feature on the app which gave it a pixelated look and a blurry affect which changed the look of things in the original photo. The third self portrait i took in a reflection so you can just see my body and the foreground of the reflection, with this photo i edited to have a warmer tone and a higher contrast.;
Final piece work experiment
For my final piece i decided to use photos i have taken outside of school and implemented my self into it with my shadow by using a projector and using a blank wall. I experimented with the photos with them either being in colour or black and white; however i believe that i could do better work with a different piece as it has not come out as well as i have hoped.
Experimenting
These photos we experimented more with light and colour gels, for each photo we used to led bulbed lights and used colour gels over the top to change the colour of the light. The reason for two lights is because it gives a half and half affect which stands out instead of just one colour. We also decided to use a black background as the light will work well with it as it will have a better look with the colours being used. Each photo we decided to use a theme of villains as they look some what mysterious.
