Places and Spaces
I will be focusing on Places and Spaces when completing this and i have chosen this question as i feel i can be most comfortable with it and it fits my style. The importance of it fitting my style is key as I believe that any work that you produce should be meaningful to you and have some aspects of your self shown throughout, i do also understand that its good to experiment with different genres however i think to produce this best work i can possibly do I will stick to what i feel is my strength. The brief introduction to the question gives many ideas for different styles of work i can produce and i think it is good to take photos of landscapes and spaces as through out the city theres various different adventures that it can take me on and i believe that is important when taking photos. What caught my eye was the mention of street photography as this is probably my favourite genre and i mainly take my photos in that style anyway, and i like the thought of the fine detail in buildings that maybe not everyone will notice but it has a good story or background to the small feature.
Nicholas Goodden
These images are from the street photographer Nicholas Goodden he takes all these images in and around London he does this and makes sures to capture the places and spaces all around him. One thing Nicholas focuses on is graffiti as he thinks that it has a deeper meaning then art, he makes sure when taking the photo that the graffiti can match the image and give it a deeper meaning. Nicholas also focuses on street photography and does this in various ways like using graffiti but also likes taking photos at different times of day and likes using the lights of the shops or cars, as the lights they give off are very luminous and give the photograph a very gloomy yet vibrant look when the photo taken at the right time. The ideas Nicholas thinks of keep adapting and this allows him to have such different images, Nicholas always choses the right images and this has allowed him to work with many different companies which inspires me to take photos as he takes photo of London and the south of England which are quite local and means anyone is able to achieve.
Single image evaluation
This image is from one of Gooddens pieces of work this is clearly an image taken in London and at night. I think Gooddens thought process works here as he decides to use the rain, the lights and the dark; I also think that he needed a subject in this image and i like the fact that it could be multiple different subjects like it couldnt be the bus or the man but either way it makes the image work. I can see that Goodden liked to use the luminous lights off the buses car and shops this gives the image a further and deeper meaning as it could portray the fact even if all is bad things around you can lighten your mood and how you are feeling. I think that this image inspired me to take pictures at night and try and capture something as of this standard.
Experimentation
These photos i took over various days and i took them in various different locations, my thought process behind this would be that having various different images can help me slowly develop what kind of photos i plan on taking for the final piece. The locations i focused on would be the large open green space especially during the morning or at night when the sun sets or the sun rises, i also tried taking photos of the road at night and try capture a car going by at the right time to get the light as i think that can be a good foreground for a picture with a nice background. I also want to try capture very nice and high backgrounds like i have done in some photos for example pictures with the background of canary wharf or central London, i want to do that as the spaces the buildings have create a perfect image espically with lighting it has at night time. I think to improve and to work on next im gonna use a digital camera and a film camera i think these will give me more variety and give me the boost in quality of photos. My main subject when working with these cameras would be shops at night as they have such vibrant colours which can be captured at certain angles and also working on big open green spaces with a main subject or something that can create a unique space that i can exploit and use to create various images. Im also going to try make double exposed images which is where you layer to images on eachother using a film camera and this can give me a very unique look.
Experimentation
These are a series of photos that were taken using a digtal camera some of these images are taken at day and some taken at night, I decided to vary the images and tryb to focus on the lights used at night. In one image of the petrol station i really liked it and decided to set up the shot and capture as much as i could of the light, i think this image is probably one of the best out of the series as it really focuses on the topic places and spaces. I believe that the images i will focus on after this experiment will be just like the petrol station photo as there places and each images are from places where i grew up and remeber visting when i was younger. Some other images I really like, for example the images on the bridge like the foot tunnel and even the image of over the bridge which captures the signs and the graffiti, I will also take some photos in that style as i think its quite aesthetically pleasing .
Todd Hido
These images from Todd Hido have some resemblance to my photos i have taken throughout my experiment and i am inspired by the work of Todd and i like how he takes his images. I think that him taking the images in the night is the main point of the image as the images would not really work and would not have the same effect this is because the night allows the light to glow and give off a different look. I like that the images are very isolated it gives a kind of creepy and unsettling vibe towards the images its quite welly executed, Todd makes sure his main object has some sort of luminous effect and this makes the images come out so well. Todd uses light so well and i think that i will use the same idea and will expiriment using light and trying to capture the light in the right way.
Experimentation
These are the images i took throughout a few weeks and i took the images at various different places all at night as im trying to keep the theme and only take photos at night, im going to do that because it keeps a consistency through out all my images and makes it much easier to categorise. I just foucsed mainly on the places and the spaces i tried to utilise as much space as i could and this can be seen in a few of the images. Im trying to vary them with having some being more urbam and some being rural with the pitcures of the grass and then the photos of the buildings. I think for my next experiment im going to focus on urban areas and buildings and i think keeping the idea of taking the photos at night.
Experimenting with film
Here are the images that i took using black and white film and a film camera this gave me some amazing images and some not so good. This is because i didnt add stop or fix when developing some images however some of these images turning out pink make the image look a lot better and give it a very abstract feel. Some images were taken at night therefore some images being to dark and some images didnt develop from being to dark. The images were taken in my local area and some were taken on my way to places or at places. I decided to focus on places in these images and i decided to do spaces however not big spaces but little gaps or little spaces in the open.
My plan
For my final piece i will be making a few konstatina books out of the images i took using a film camera that i developed in the darkroom. These books will be a visual representation of my journey with each book a different journey as one will be within North greenwhich and close to my area, one being in Lee Green and one of the area close to me. These areas mean something to me as i visit atleast one of the images each day.
